Household hazardous waste (HHW) refers to everyday items that can be harmful to human health and the environment if not disposed of properly. Common hazardous materials found in many homes today include paints, batteries, cleaners, pesticides, and light bulbs to name a few. Understanding how to handle and dispose of these items is essential to keeping our homes safe and protecting the environment.

This being said, do YOU know how to safely handle these materials?

If you answered no, you aren’t alone! Here are some useful steps you can follow as you sort through those unwanted hazardous materials.

Make a list:
– Make a list of products in your home that might be considered hazardous. This can include cleaning supplies, paints, batteries, light bulbs, and more.

Check the product labels:
– All products labeled for retail sales are required to have their product information accessible to the buyer. Check the bottle, jug, or box that your materials came in for hazard symbols or words that indicate the item is corrosive, flammable, toxic, reactive, or explosive.

Gather your items:
– Carefully gather your items and place them in a secured, upright container for transport. Be sure that your items are free from damage that could lead to leaks, spills, or products mixing with one another as this could be dangerous.

Drop them off at the Recycling Center here in Carroll:
– Place your products on the shelves located in our front entry way so that we can make sure your items are disposed of properly.

Taking the time to properly dispose of household hazardous waste is an important step in protecting both our health and the environment. Let’s work together to manage our waste responsibly and protect our planet for future generations!
