Have you heard about backyard composting but do not know if it will work for your family? Are you interested in reducing the amount of food waste your family throws away each week? Have you ever wanted to start composting in your backyard?

If so, we hope you’ll join us for a free and fun workshop here at the Carroll County Landfill. If you’re new to composting, you’ll learn how to get started – what materials can you use, how much space do you need, how long does it take to turn yard waste and food scraps into compost. If you already have a backyard compost pile, you’ll learn how to troubleshoot any issues you might be having, add in different types of materials, and improve the compost.

Families are welcome, and each household will leave with their own backyard compost bin along with the other materials in the free “Get the Dirt on Compost Kit.” In total, the kit includes approximately $100 worth of materials.

  • Backyard compost bin
  • Scale
  • Kitchen food scrap bucket
  • Detailed how-to guide
  • Food waste tracking sheets

The workshop takes place on Thursday, September 26, 2019. Two separate sessions of the workshop are available to accommodate busy schedules. Both sessions are on Thursday, September 26, 2019, with the first one from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m., followed by a second from 7:00-8:30 p.m.

The workshop is free, but seats are limited. Registration is due by Friday, September 20, 2019. For more information and to get your registration form, visit or contact Mary Wittry at [email protected] or (712) 792-5001.
